Meet Julie Michaels

Founder & Studio Owner, Ray Pilates

Julie Michaels is the founder and studio owner of Ray Pilates.  A former film industry professional turned movement educator, Julie’s career path may seem like a complete pivot — but for her, it was a natural evolution.  Movement has always been a part of her DNA.

Growing up, Julie danced throughout her childhood and teenage years.  By high school, she was already certified as an aerobics instructor with the Ontario Fitness Council. She went on to study exercise science while completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Film Production from Concordia University and it was during her time working in Hollywood that Julie discovered Pilates. All it took was one class and she was hooked. Pilates not only helped heal her own injuries, it introduced her to a mindset that she deeply identified with.

Driven by a passion for Pilates and its embedded “work smarter not harder” philosophy, Julie changed careers and eventually opened Ray Pilates in 2009.  With over 16 years of experience, Julie specializes in custom programs for clients ranging from athletes to pregnant moms and seniors seeking rehab.  Julie frequently collaborates with physiotherapists, athletic therapists, and osteopaths to develop comprehensive treatment plans for clients recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions, or returning to fitness after pregnancy.

Julie keeps on top of the latest developments in movement science through continuing education courses from Body Harmonics in Toronto, and Balanced Body in Sacramento.

Outside of the studio, Julie loves swimming, singing, hiking, and spending time with her husband and two children.

Known for her warm, personable style and sense of humour, Julie creates a welcoming studio environment where laughter and movement go hand-in-hand. Her mission is simple: to help people move better, feel stronger, and live more fully.  It’s not uncommon to hear laughter echoing through the studio—because for Julie, movement should feel as good for the soul as it does for the body.
